Isra Khan

Student

Barrington High School • Barrington, Illinois

Isra Khan’s love of reading is reflected in her many literary endeavors. When she isn’t reading for fun, she started writing poetry herself and serves as editor-in-chief of Nuance, the official literary arts magazine of Barrington High School in Barrington, Ill., where Khan is scheduled to graduate from next year.

“I am also president of Broncos for Books, a club that seeks to connect students through literature,” Khan said. “In terms of extracurriculars, I do weekly poetry readings at senior homes, a literary program with refugee girls at a relief center. I also have a website where I write book reviews and talk about other book related topics!”

Khan also enjoys traveling with her Mom and sisters, and she considers her mother – a doctor at Northwestern University – her hero.

“She regularly connects with local representatives and senators, advocating for causes she deeply believes in,” Khan said. “My mother is a woman of unwavering conviction, and I’ve never seen her shy away from standing up for her principles. She has shown me what it truly means to be both strong and compassionate.”

As a future voter herself, Khan considers health care, gun control, and reproductive rights as the issues she cares about most. Khan was a winner in the Bill of Rights Institute’s Think The Vote program and enjoyed learning about and researching new topics with her fellow students.

“There are so many issues that would simply never cross my mind, and participating in Think the Vote allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of at least one of these issues,” she said.
