0:00 Welcome young historians! Let’s investigate together the colonial era of American history. This story highlights the courage of the Native Americans and European settlers with such interesting cultures and stories. I can’t wait to begin! Long ago, before skyscrapers and bustling cities.

0:23 North America was a land of diverse native peoples. Many powerful Native American tribes thrived across this vast land. They built large towns, traded with each other, and had their own systems of government. But then explorers

0:43 from faraway lands like Spain arrived. The Native Americans courageously faced newcomers with different weapons, religions, and values than their own.

1:03 Europeans brought with them challenges that Native Americans had never encountered before, like diseases, the Europeans had unintentionally brought. They weakened and killed many native peoples. Later on, more settlers from Europe came to America, this time from the nation of England.

1:26 One man named John Smith worked for the Virginia Company of London, and saw settling in America as a good business move. He settled in Jamestown in 1607 with about 100 other men. They created the first English

1:47 permanent settlement in North America. The English settlers were very courageous. They faced challenges in this new land like lack of food, disease, and disorganization. They also did not get along very well with the Native Americans in the region

2:08 called the Five Nations or Powhatan Confederacy. The two groups struggled to control the area. Soon after, another English group called the Puritans landed in Plymouth, seeking a new beginning and forming bonds with the Native Americans of their region, the Wampanoag.

2:29 This relationship is the basis of the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States. The Puritans practiced self-government by creating the Mayflower Compact, a set of rules that all the residents of Plymouth promised to follow.

2:54 Native Americans and English settlers both faced change during the colonial era. The Europeans chose change by coming to North America, but had to leave everything they had ever known in Europe. The Native Americans had to change when new people suddenly appeared in their lands.

3:18 Our story for today ends here, but the story of history is still being written by us. The stories of these brave Americans in the colonial era remind us of the power of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Their legacies live on, inspiring us to build

3:39 a world of understanding and respect for all.
