Should the United States Allow More Immigrants to Enter the Country?

0% yes
0% no

Immigration is one of the most significant issues in the 2024 election. Some voters wish to see reforms that ease the immigration process, allowing more immigrants the United States. Others argue that the current immigration system is too open, and that immigration should be restricted.

Those who argue that the United States should increase restrictions on immigration argue that doing so will help our nation economically and supports those seeking a new beginning. They argue that the current system allows only a tiny percentage to enter of the tens of millions who wish to move to the United States. This side claims our country has a long tradition of welcoming immigrants, and it should work to live up to that history as much as possible. They also argue that immigrants strengthen the economy and bring diversity, which improves the nation as a whole.

Those who argue that the United States should further restrict immigration contend that it is, in part, in the country’s national security interest to do so. They also argue that strong limits should exist on immigration in order to protect American workers, as they contend that immigrants generally work for lower wages, which in turn lowers wages for native-born citizens. They may also argue that immigrants can be a drain on our country’s welfare system.

So, what do you think? Should the United States Allow More Immigrants to Enter the Country? Students can answer Yes, it should; No, it should not; or a nuanced answer in between! Be sure to submit your answers by October 24 to be considered for this week’s competition.
