Should Schools Require Students to Wear Masks?

44% yes
56% no

Mask mandates in public settings has been a hotly debated issue for the last year, and now the dispute has shifted to schools. Some states and districts have passed requirements for masks in school—but others have created orders that ban requiring masks. The controversy is very personal for parents who want what is best for the physical and mental health of their children.

Those who argue in favor of schools requiring students to wear masks argue that doing so is essential for the health of students and teachers. They contend that masks help stop the spread of COVID-19 and they have little to no negative impact on other health aspects or the ability for students to socialize. Additionally, they may argue that the government has the authority to require masks because it is to protect the health of the population.

Those who oppose schools requiring students to wear masks argue that doing so is detrimental to the well-being of students. They contend that children rarely transmit COVID-19 and masks harm the ability to socialize in a healthy way. They may also argue that vaccines will largely keep teachers safe, and there is therefore no need for mask mandates. Finally, they argue that requiring masks is an overreach of government power because it does not allow parents to make decisions for their children.

So, what do you think? Should schools require students to wear masks? Students may answer Yes, they should; No, they should not; or a nuanced answer in-between!
