Should Fracking be Banned in the U.S.?

0% yes
0% no

Fracking has revolutionized the U.S. energy industry, making the country one of the world’s largest producers of oil and natural gas. Fracking is a method of extracting oil and natural gas from underground shale rock formations. Some believe fracking provides significant economic benefits and enhances U.S. energy independence. However, others argue fracking has created serious environmental and public health concerns, fueling debates over whether it should be banned.

Proponents of banning fracking argue the process releases harmful gases into the air, contributing to air pollution. They argue the chemicals used in fracking fluids can leak into the environment, posing risks to drinking water supplies, agriculture, and livestock. Additionally, proponents of banning fracking argue the pollutants released from fracking operations can cause health concerns such as asthma, lung disease, and cancer. Given these environmental and health risks, some believe banning fracking is necessary to protect public well-being.

Opponents of banning fracking argue that the industry creates jobs and boosts local economies. They argue banning fracking could result in significant job losses, affecting not only oil and gas workers but also industries such as transportation, manufacturing, and construction. They also argue fracking contributes to the U.S. GDP, boosting economic growth through domestic energy production, while simultaneously keeping energy prices low for consumers through large supplies of oil and gas. Additionally, they may argue fracking reduces the U.S. reliance on foreign oil and natural gas, strengthening American national security.
