Debates Over the Declaration on the Road to the Constitution

Use Divided Over the Declaration to better connect the foundations of our Founding documents for your students in September. Through our 2026 Constitution Day theme, Road to the Constitution, we'll examine how everyday citizens fought to realize the Declaration's promise of equality and contributed to the creation of a new government.

Constitution Day Live is a Bill of Rights Institute program commemorating the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787. In the weeks leading up to Constitution Day, a new series of engaging K–12 videos and additional materials in U.S. History, Government, and Civics will roll out, each spotlighting the Constitution and the founding principles behind it.This years program, Road to the Constitution, will highlight the years between the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Constitution leading up to Constitution Day on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The experience will begin on Monday, May 4 with the first of 27 grievances laid out by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence.
