BRI Honored by Sons of the American Revolution for Helping Boy Scouts
Members of the Stones River (Tenn.) Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution wanted to provide pocket-sized versions of the U.S. Constitution to every Boy Scout troop in their area.
Their search led them to the Bill of Rights Institute and the Pocket Constitutions BRI distributes nationwide. As a token of their appreciation, the Sons of the American Revolution presented BRI with Certificates of Appreciation and the America 250 Anniversary Challenge Coin for Education.
The coin represents Sons of the American Revolution’s values regarding education, history, and patriotism and it also commemorates the upcoming 50th anniversary of the United States’ independence from Britain.
SAR regularly participates in marking the graves of soldiers who died fighting in the Revolutionary War. The group also presents the colors of the American flag at various ceremonies that honor monuments erected in remembrance of veterans who died while serving, as well as for Gold Star families.
SAR also provides American flags to local schools, participates in Wreaths Across America, and offers a youth awards program for Boy Scouts who achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
“The feedback on our project has been very positive,” said Jack McElwain, chair of the SAR Stones River chapter. “As we distribute the booklets, we ask for a commitment from each scout to pick a day during the year, such as their birthday, 4th of July, Veterans Day, etc., to read it from cover to cover! We also tell them that they are the future guardians of the rights and liberties afforded [to] us in these documents.”
