This video is your overview of the team challenge at the National Civic Bee Championship. Let’s walk through what to expect so you feel prepared for the challenge. For the team challenge, you’ll be grouped into teams.
0:23 Each team will be assigned a real world issue. Your job. Work together to develop a thoughtful, creative, and realistic solution. Your solution must incorporate founding principles and civic virtues. Engage partners like elected officials, businesses, or local organizations. Be clear, practical, and engaging.
0:44 Additionally, you and your teammates must exhibit strong civic disposition. Civic disposition is the attitude, habits, and behaviors essential for individuals to participate effectively and responsibly in a democratic society. Points earned for disposition will be added to your scorecard.
1:05 At the start of the challenge. You’ll be provided everything you need, including step by step worksheets to guide you in developing your ideas. Background information to research your issue. A list of founding principles and civic virtues and the judging rubrics. Now let’s break the challenge down into three parts. Part one.
1:25 Research and brainstorm. To begin, you’ll read your team’s issue. Here’s an example to give you an idea of what kind of issues to expect. Athletic opportunities for you. Your community has limited athletic opportunities for young people, leading to lower physical activity levels and fewer outlets for healthy competition and teamwork.
1:45 Many existing programs are underfunded and access to sports facilities is restricted, impacting the overall well-being and development of the youth. You will be provided with research resources to understand the problem. There’s no need to prepare or do additional research before the championship. Then you will collaborate and begin
2:05 sketching ideas to solve your issue as a team. It’s important to note you’ll be judged on how well you display civic disposition. Treat every teammate with respect. Listen actively, include every voice and collaborate constructively. The better you work as a team, the better your solution will be.
2:26 Part two. Develop your solution. You may use the worksheets to finalize your solution. The worksheet provides a question sentence, stems and guidance on how to think about your issue and potential solutions. Make sure your ideas reflect key founding principles and civic virtues. 3:07 Government officials, business partners, the community. Part three. Prepare and practice. You’ll be given a laptop with slide templates to help organize your presentation. You will describe your solution and explain how it solves the problem at this time. You will practice your presentation and prepare for the Q&A.
3:28 Remember that the judge will still be at your table observing how well your team integrates your ideas. It’s important to collaborate and ensure that everyone participates.
