Meet Your BRI Team: Content

More than 6,000 resources related to history, government and civics education are available to educators, courtesy of the Bill of Rights Institute. Don’t take our word for it – see for yourself!

But have you wondered where these free resources come from? They are the result of the constant hard work from BRI’s Content team, which creates, develops, and maintains the educational resources that teachers and students use every day.

The team translates core Founding principles and civic virtues into engaging, classroom-ready materials for students from elementary through high school. Examples of resources created by our Content team include everything from full curriculum, to lesson plans, , primary source activities, narrative essays, assessments, and other teacher supporting materials.

BRI also produces videos on topics ranging from Supreme Court cases to essential primary sources and even interviews with leading scholars. Collaborating with other teams, such as Programs, Marketing, and Development, ensures BRI’s content reaches educators effectively and aligns with our broader organizational goals.

Collaboration is prevalent among the Content team. Projects start with research and planning, helping define learning objectives, audience needs, scope, and format. Writers and subject-matter experts then create the content, which undergoes several rounds of review by the Content team for historical accuracy, clarity, alignment with standards, and classroom usability.

Depending on the project, resources might also include a video that goes through multimedia production and digital implementation, and is assisted by BRI’s Marketing team before publication.

After the content is finalized, it is posted on BRI’s platforms, promoted to educators, and incorporated into programs, webinars, or classroom events. Once it goes live, the team reviews performance and educator feedback on the content so that resources continue to improve over time.

Specific examples of BRI’s most popular content include Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, which has the first core resources developed by BRI to teach U.S. history; Documents of Freedom, which was BRI’s first major effort at creating a curriculum; and our Homework Help and Scholar Talks videos, which have generated millions of views on YouTube.

“BRI’s content team sits at the heart of the Institute’s work,” said Kirk Higgins, vice president of content. “We interface daily with the teacher and student programs teams, as well as the [BRI] Civics Lab to help create resources and programs that equip students with the knowledge and skills that support self-government.”
