BRI Sponsors Annual Democracy Bowl

History and civics were the name of the game at the third annual Democracy Bowl earlier this month.

As part of an event sponsored by the Bill of Rights Institute, more than 200 students from multiple school districts gathered at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Pa.) to compete in a trivia contest focused on history and civics.

The event spurred students to think seriously about what it means to be a citizen, connect their classroom learning to real civic action, and build their knowledge of America’s founding principles and responsibilities.

Students were divided into small teams and answered trivia questions about the United States government, history, civics, and citizenship. The event was also a showcase for students in grades 6-12 to share their community service and civic action projects, win prizes, and demonstrate their positive impact on their local community.

The winners for grades 6-8 were Jedrik Lewczenko, A’Zayah Brown, and Connor Coulibaly, and the winners for grades 9-12 were Molli Lazzari, Vanessa Barnyak, Bridget Semanchik, Kaylee Grove, Danika Faith, Karlee Beyer, Taylor Synder, Paelyn Pcola, and Faith Wolfhope.
