BRI Goes Virtual in January

The new year means we’re closer to celebrating America’s 250th birthday in July. The Bill of Rights Institute is at the forefront for the occasion, which includes hosting multiple virtual remote training sessions for teachers last month.

Courtesy of Don Jenkins, BRI’s manager of program partnerships, teachers explored the Institute’s resources that focus on the Declaration of Independence as part of A250. During three remote sessions in January for elementary, middle, and high school teachers, they were equipped with strategies for teaching concepts such as natural rights, grievances, and independence in ways that engage students across various grade levels.

BRI also hosted in-person professional development sessions for teachers in North Carolina and Texas last month. Shawn McCusker, director of teacher programs at BRI, led a group of 65 teachers through an overview of BRI’s primary sources.

Lori Rech, BRI’s regional programs manager, hosted Texas teachers in a discussion on several topics, including our elementary curriculum, BRI Jr., with an emphasis on the Civil War, Reconstruction, and westward expansion.

Teachers who attended the Texas session said they will make ample use of BRI’s games, vocabulary sheets, and other resources, with one teacher adding that they learned “lots of new ideas that I can incorporate into Texas history, like the games, vocabulary, and task cards.”

More information on upcoming workshops can be found by visiting the Events page on the BRI website.
