Sophie Elsen
Student
Washington High School - Sioux Falls, South Dakota
As a winner from the Bill of Rights Institute’s “Think The Vote” program, Sophie Elsen said she enjoys getting to “voice my opinion on relevant issues, and back it up with logical reasoning. I also enjoy being able to see the perspectives of others from across the country and their thinking on the topic.”
“Lots of times, people neglect the views of high schoolers, saying they are too young to be heard when discussing important topics going on in the world,” she added. “Think the Vote gives them a platform to voice their opinions and thoughts on the many topics that people ignore their voices on.”
Elsen is a student at Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D., prides herself on her “ability to find positives in the most challenging and difficult situations, as well as keeping a positive attitude throughout it,” she said. “In situations where tensions are high, I’m able to diffuse the situation and remain positive throughout.”
She partly attributes those qualities to her mother, who Elsen also considers her hero.
“She puts her heart into everything she does,” Elsen said. “She doesn’t feel like she’s seen a lot, but she still puts in the work, shows up, and makes a positive impact on others’ lives. I strive to be like my mom . . . she is a true inspiration and one of the most pure-hearted people you could ever meet.”
Elsen participates in soccer and in her school’s book club, Senior Events Committee, Link Crew, Renaissance committee, and debate team. As a future voter, she considers climate change, the environment, individual rights, and gun violence prevention the topics she cares about most.
Elsen plans to major in architecture or psychology in college and in her spare time, she enjoys reading, creative writing, photography, baking, spending time with friends, watching television, listening to music, and building Lego sets.
