Jennifer Button
Educator
Pine Forest High School • Fayetteville, North Carolina
Jennifer has been teaching for 20 years and currently works with more than 150 students each year. She teaches her students to understand the Constitution not just as a historical document, but as a living framework they must engage with as citizens.
She emphasizes civil discourse, classroom debates, and critical thinking, giving students the tools to analyze documents, respect diverse perspectives, and engage meaningfully in democracy.
She recalls being drawn to teaching because of the powerful influence of her own parents and educators. “I wanted to be that for other kids,” she said. Her classroom activity introducing students to the Articles of the Constitution, working in groups to analyze excerpts and guiding questions, sets the tone for a semester of meaningful constitutional study.
Jennifer believes her role is to ensure students leave her classroom with knowledge of the Constitution, an understanding of core civic principles like liberty and justice, and the skills of civil conversation and critical analysis. She hopes her students carry these lessons forward as engaged citizens in a free and just society.
