Canaan Jones’ favorite part of participating in the Bill of Rights Institute’s Think The Vote campaign is that it requires students to really engage in deep thinking.
“Participating [in Think The Vote also] allows me to think about things like foreign policy,” said Jones, a student at Jena High School in Jena, La. He was named the winner of Think The Vote’s recent question about whether or not the United States should intervene militarily in foreign conflicts.
Jones plays basketball at Jena High and participates in multiple student organizations, including his school’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). He said he took great pride in maintaining a 4.0 GPA in his first year of high school, as well as placing second in the local chapter of a Louisiana literacy rally and competing at the state level at Louisiana State University.
He takes inspiration from his mother, who Jones called his hero “because she has always been there for me,” he said.
Jones is interested in a career as a lawyer or politician, and said the economy, immigration, and human rights are the issues he cares about most. In his spare time, Jones enjoys playing cards, swimming, and riding his 4-wheeler.
