You ‘Get’ What You ‘Give’ With BRI’s New Game

by Bill of Rights Institute on

Can the effectiveness of a civil society be shaped by the interaction of private citizens and public officials, as well as the management of resources?

That question is the theme of the Bill of Rights Institute’s new tabletop game, “Give Get.” The game is part of BRI’s new Government and Politics: Civics for the American Experiment curriculum and analyzes the importance of civic engagement in civil society. It also asks students to apply strategic thinking to balance competing priorities in an environment with constrained resources.

Throughout the game, players discuss the role of collaboration and communication in achieving community goals and compare the effectiveness of different types of civic actions in addressing societal needs.

After completing the game, BRI’s Content team provided a debriefing guide to help students discuss how the game simulates real-world challenges in democratic governance and civic engagement and pointed out the most effective strategies to balance individual needs and community goals.

BRI field-tested Give Get with teachers in Florida, Michigan, and at last year’s Sphere Summit in Washington, D.C, and teachers expressed they felt engaged while trying the game, which they believe would translate to their students’ gameplay experience.
