With Think The Vote, Student Voices Matter

Every two weeks, the Bill of Rights Institute shares a new question in its Think The Vote campaign. This provides students the opportunity to express their opinion on a current issue in America and promote civil discourse with their fellow students. A winner is also selected for the student who makes the most convincing argument for their stance on a particular topic.

Lucy Chaplin, a student at Saint Henry District High School in Erlanger, Ky., considers the topics of gun rights and immigration important to her and said AP Government and AP Psychology are her favorite classes.

“Once I complete my major, I would like to go into the Army to be a psychologist,” she added. “After my eight years are up, I plan on opening up my own practice or working for a private practice that specializes in helping veterans with PTSD or other mental illnesses from being in the military.”

Combating the rising cost of education and increasing the availability of well-paying jobs are the most important causes to Megan Luong, a student and Think The Vote winner at Notre Dame High School in San Jose, Calif.

“Particularly for immigrants who face cultural and language barriers and youth from historically underrepresented backgrounds,” she said.

Matilda Moore, a student at Adrienne C. Nelson High School in Happy Valley, Ore., feels strongly about LGTBQ rights, women’s reproductive health issues, and climate change. She is a member of her school’s Green Team and said participating in Think The Vote “gives me a chance to express my ideas and opinions.”

“I get to see other points of view and ways others think,” Moore said. “It makes me more open-minded and considerate of people’s opinions.”

Other Think The Vote winners include Quinnlan Donovan, a student at Mashpee Middle High School in Mashpee, Mass., and Austin Smith, a student at Newark Valley High School in Newark Valley, N.Y.
