Utah Students Showcase Civic Engagement Skills at MyImpact Challenge Event

by Bill of Rights Institute on

Utah students had the opportunity to hear from top-notch speakers, showcase their civic engagement skills, and compete for $5,000 in prizes at the Utah MyImpact Challenge Youth Leadership Workshop.

Hosted on June 14 at the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, the Utah MyImpact Challenge Youth Leadership Workshop represented a collaboration among the Bill of Rights Institute, the Utah Valley University Center for Constitutional Studies, the Utah Civic Learning Collaborative, and Youthlinc.

Students participated in a day of civic education and leadership programming, and had an opportunity to demonstrate their MyImpact Challenge projects.

MyImpact Challenge is a national contest hosted by the Bill of Rights Institute where students develop constitutionally-principled civic engagement projects. At this state MyImpact Challenge fair, Utah students competed for $5,000 in total prize money, including a $2,000 grand prize.

This year’s grand prize winner was Violet Brown, a student at Springville Junior High School in Springville, UT, who saw an opportunity to improve safety for young bicycle riders in her community.

Brown helped develop a local “traffic garden,” where young bicyclists could practice rules of the road on miniature streets drawn with chalk. In addition to protecting young cyclists, Brown demonstrated the power of community partnerships by collaborating with groups like the Hobble Creek Bicycle Association.

Utah MyImpact Challenge Youth Leadership Workshop students also participated in a day of civic education programming and heard remarks delivered by:

Dr. Matthew Brogdon, Senior Director, Center for Constitutional Studies, Utah Valley University

Stan Swim, Chief Program Officer, Bill of Rights Institute

Audrey Su, Founder, Title I Strings and Grand Prize Winner, 2023 Utah MyImpact Challenge

Robert Austin, Utah State Board of Education

Janessa Edwards, AmeriCorps Program Officer, UServeUtah

Madison Cook, Community Engagement Program Specialist, UServeUtah

Pam Su’a, Civic Education Program Development Specialist, Utah Valley University

During Su’a's presentation, students even had the opportunity to provide educational leaders with feedback on a proposed Seal of Civic Readiness in Utah.
