Utah has been called the “Beehive State.”

And Utah Valley University was buzzing with excitement on June 14 when students from across the state presented their projects as part of the Bill of Rights Institute’s MyImpact Challenge contest.

MyImpact Challenge is the Bill of Rights Institute’s national civic engagement contest where students develop constitutionally-principled service projects that benefit their communities.

Through a unique collaboration among the Utah Civic Learning Collaborative, Utah Valley University’s Center for Constitutional Studies, and Youthlinc, BRI was able to host a MyImpact Challenge fair at Utah Valley University as part of a state civics showcase.

Utah students competed for $5,000 in prizes from the Bill of Rights Institute and are now entered into the MyImpact Challenge national contest, where BRI will award another $40,000 to students and their teachers.

Students were also treated to a special video message from Utah Gov. Spencer Cox who thanked the Bill of Rights Institute for bringing MyImpact Challenge to Utah and encouraged students to stay active in their state and communities.

MyImpact Challenge projects at the Utah fair addressed free speech, educating young people about the U.S. Constitution, decreasing gun violence, and more.

Audrey Su, a student at Skyline High School in Salt Lake County, took home the $2,000 grand prize for Title 1 Strings, a program she founded that brings free string music education to Title 1 schools throughout Utah.

BRI Chief Program Officer Stan Swim, Sr. Director of Civic Learning Initiatives Rachel Davison Humphries, and Manager of Civic Engagement Projects Adam Brickley were on hand to review student projects and honor the winners.

“We are so grateful for our in-state partners and the teachers and students who helped us bring MyImpact Challenge to Utah,” Humphries said. “We believe that a quality civics education should help students learn to exercise the skills of citizenship. It was inspiring to see so many students applying their civic knowledge to strengthen their communities.”
