New BRI Alignment Tool Helps Florida Teachers
The Bill of Rights Institute recently launched its state standards alignment tool, which recommends BRI resources educators can use to meet civics and history education standards in their respective states.
Currently, BRI offers an alignment tool for teachers in Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, and Utah, with a tool for Pennsylvania teachers set to launch soon. The tool allows teachers to filter their state’s standards by grade, subject, and the type of resource they want to use.
Florida teachers can filter standards for grades 7-12 and for the subjects of civics, government, and American history. They can also view the content by standards, such as demonstrating an understanding of the origins and purposes of government, law, and the American political system; evaluating the roles, rights, and responsibilities of United States citizens, and determining methods of active participation in society, government, and the political system; and demonstrating an understanding of the principles, functions, and organization of government.
BRI shares links to resources under each standard to show teachers what they can use in their classrooms, including activities, essays, and lessons from curricula like Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness (BRI’s comprehensive U.S. History digital textbook), Being an American, Documents of Freedom, and Religious Liberty: An American Experiment.
The Institute held workshops to introduce state standards tools to teachers, and one Florida said they “absolutely loved” the workshop and it added to their love of learning.
“Honestly, everything was helpful,” said another Florida teacher. “I just finished my third year teaching and I am a sponge, absorbing everything I can to improve in content and pedagogy.”
