Introducing BRI’s Middle School Videos!

Earlier this year, the Bill of Rights Institute introduced new videos to accompany our resource for elementary school students, BRI Jr.

Now, the newest resource from BRI for middle school students, Building a Self-Governing People, is getting in on the fun with its own video playlist on BRI’s YouTube channel. It offers videos on a wide range of topics that are found in Building a Self-Governing People, including the American Revolution, civics and constitutional life, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

The videos are concise, move quickly, and can be used flexibly in the classroom to support historical thinking and writing skills. Each one guides students through an engaging, 2-part exploration of history courtesy of a special “museum curator” and “professor.”

They lead students on a guided investigation of a primary or historical source and demonstrate how to use that source to answer a historical question, with a focus on key document-based question (DBQ) skills such as writing a thesis or grouping sources. The DBQ skill sections also integrate the grade 6–8 DBQ organizers and other resources to teach target skills.

BRI’s YouTube channel features an extensive library of videos, including a playlist of mini-documentaries commemorating America’s 250th birthday, our Primary Source Essentials and Scholar Talks, as well as videos related to curricula such as Government and Politics: Civics for the American Experiment and Heroes and Villains.
