Bill of Rights Institute Director of Teacher & Student Programs Joe Schmidt will soon be receiving a prestigious honor thanks to his many contributions to social studies education.

The Middle States Council for Social Studies selected Schmidt as the latest recipient of its Daniel Roselle Award. The award recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to the social studies field and is named for Daniel Roselle, the former editor of Social Education – the quarterly publication of the National Council for the Social Studies.

In his current role at BRI, Schmidt designs, manages, and leads educational programs for teachers and students nationwide.

He joined BRI in 2022 after working in the social studies and civics education fields for 17 years as a teacher and college professor. He also held leadership positions in district and state-level school organizations and social studies-related organizations like the National Council for the Social Studies, iCivics, Learning for Justice, the National Council for Geographic Education, and ThinkerAnalytix.

Schmidt and co-author Nichelle Pinkney also published a book in 2022 titled “Civil Discourse: Classroom Conversations for Stronger Communities.”

Schmidt will be the keynote speaker at the annual MSCSS conference next month and said “when an organization like MSCSS reaches out to tell you that you are receiving this award, it helps you understand that your work does make a difference for teachers and students.”

Schmidt plans to discuss how to support students and the importance of community building to teacher growth in his speech, among other topics.

“When you do work like writing a book, creating curriculum, or leading professional development, you usually do not get a chance to see how that impacts teachers and students,” he said. “But even now, it is hard to process that doing what I love is recognized as quality work by other people because I have learned from so many great educators.”
