BRI President and CEO Discusses America’s 250th Birthday

by Bill of Rights Institute on

The United States of America will celebrate a historic birthday in 2026, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

So how should America mark its “semiquincentennial” celebration?

That was the topic that Bill of Rights Institute President and CEO David Bobb tackled in a recent interview on Inside Sources with Boyd Matheson, on KSL NewsRadio in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“I look at this as an opportunity for America to celebrate things that give us confidence about the future,” Bobb said.

Bobb discussed the Founding principles of liberty and equality enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, and how those principles will be essential if America hopes to flourish for another 250 years.

Even during times when America did not live up to those principles, they became crucial rallying cries during efforts to abolish slavery, grant women the right to vote, and advance civil rights.

“Think back to those great freedom fighters who pointed back to that same thing done on July 4, 1776,” Bobb said. “They’re all pointing back those principles and saying ‘that’s what we’re trying to achieve.’”

America’s 250th birthday can be a unifying time for Americans, Bobb said, as we reflect on our principles, the high standards we set for our nation, and the progress those principles allowed us to achieve.

“Equality and liberty for all — we set that as a standard that judges us,” Bobb said. “Are we living to that standards? That takes a lot of courage.”
