Earlier this month, more than 750 students from Bay City Central High School in Bay City, Mich., celebrated Constitution Day, which commemorated the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, by joining the Bill of Rights Institute in “Civicspalooza,” a daylong event centered on civic learning and engagement.

Civicspalooza was a collaboration between Bay City Public Schools and BRI. Students participated in interactive activities to test their knowledge of U.S. history and government with collaborative, tabletop games and a civics bee competition, practiced debate in small groups, and workshopped civic action projects.

Additionally, students met with members of local organizations in the Bay City area across public, business, and philanthropic sectors, including the Bay City Department of Public Safety, the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Bay Veterans Foundation.

BRI supports more than 80,000 history and civics teachers, who reach more than 8 million students, in every corner of America. The Institute offers a variety of civic learning opportunities for young people to explore constitutional principles like equality and justice, create service projects that benefit their communities, practice civil discourse, and develop as civic leaders.

Civicspalooza emphasized the importance of civic education in preparing young people to be informed and engaged members of society.

“To live by the principles of the Constitution and to practice self-governance relies on the daily activity of citizens of all ages,” said Rachel Davison Humphries, Bill of Rights Institute Senior Director, Civic Learning Initiatives. “This starts with young people recognizing that they can make a real difference in their communities, right now.”
