Civil Liberty, Commerce, and the Constitution

Required pre-conference readings to include selections from:

  • John Locke
  • James Madison
  • George Mason
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • Benjamin Franklin
  • Woodrow Wilson
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • Herbert Hoover

Lectures in Washington, D.C. by constitutional scholars, as well as lesson plans and classroom applications on topics to include:

  • Property and the Constitution
  • Commerce and the Constitution
  • Public policy debates regarding central economic planning and the Constitution
  • Economic sectionalism, cronyism, and special interests
  • Supreme Court decisions regarding property rights

Educational visits to historic sites to include:

  • National Archives
  • Mount Vernon
  • National Park Service Ranger-led Walking Tour of National Monuments

Applicants should understand that scheduled activities will fully occupy their time each day.  From the program opening at 4:30 p.m. on Monday until its closing at noon on Friday, there will be no time for individual tourist or sight-seeing activities. Unfortunately, we are not able to include any participant’s family or guests in any of the scheduled activities.   Participants invited to join Founders Fellows should arrange travel schedules so that they arrive at the conference hotel by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, and departing flights may be scheduled no earlier than 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
